You will know if a product is organic when there is a label certifying that it is organic such as the USDA Organic Seal. The seal is awarded ONLY to those companies which meet the stringent regulations that governs the process in the organic food and organic agriculture production. The requirements vary from country to country, and from one certifying agent to another, thus the organic products sold in the supermarkets may not be equally organic. In other words, although a product carries the word "organic", it doesn't mean that it is 100% organic.

The USDA has identified three categories for labeling organic products:
- 100% Organic: Made with 100% organic ingredients
- Organic: Made with at least 95% organic ingredients
- Made With Organic Ingredients: Made with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients with strict restrictions on the remaining 30% including no GMOs (genetically modified organisms)
- Products with less than 70% organic ingredients may list organically produced ingredients on the side panel of the package, but may not make any organic claims on the front of the package.

The Soil Association (the United Kingdom) has identified two main categories for labeling organic products:
- Organic: Made with at least 95% organic ingredients
- Made with Organic Ingredients: Made with at least 70% organic ingredients (non-organic ingredients must not be detrimental to the health and the environment)
